Kale → German.

Kale
First Description: Stewart
Culin, 1894
Cycles: One
Ranks: Two
Sowing: Single laps
Region: Gabon

Kale is a close variant of Oware, which is played by the Fang, Gabon River, Gabon. The game was first described in 1894 by Stewart Culin, who got the rules from the collector Rev. A. C. Good.

Rules

The rules are almost like those of Oware.

Differences:

  • A singleton in the rightmost hole doesn't capture even if it makes a two or a three.
  • The counters that remain on the board at the end of the game are not counted by either player.

Kale board

Nothing is said about capturing all the seeds from the opponent or feeding him. Songo, another game of the Fang, has in this regard rules similar to Oware and interestingly has the same prohibition for singletons.
