Inventors: Assia Popova & André Deledicq, 1977 |
Ranks: Two |
Sowing: Single laps |
Region: France |
Nano-Wari was created by the Bulgarian Assia Popova and the French André Deledicq in 1977 who called it a game of contemplation because it's a game without any choice, strategy or intelligence. The game, which is the smallest mancala variant in existence, was completely analyzed in their book Wari et Solo.
Rules
Initial Position
Nano-Wari is played on a two-rank board with one hole per side. Initially there are four seeds in each hole.
A move consists of emptying your own hole and distributing its contents in a circular manner (clockwise or counterclockwise does not matter) into both holes of the board. The first seed must be dropped in the opponent's hole.
The move ends after a single lap.
No seeds can be captured.
The game ends when a board position is repeated.
There are no winners or losers.
Comments
The position repeats itself every two moves. The game is as follows (South starts):
Initial Position
After odd number of moves
After even number of moves
Deledicq & Popova also proposed it with different numbers of seeds per hole at the beginning.
- With 1 it is: 1/1 <-> 2/0
- With 2 it is: 2/2 -> 3/1 <-> 1/3
- With 3 it is: 3/3 -> 5/1 -> 2/4 <-> 4/2
