Modiar is a simple mancala game played by children in rural villages near Tanger (Morocco) according to Loubna Charrabi, an informant from Chrarba. The game was first described by Jordi Climent in December 2012.

The game is played with pebbles and holes are usually dug into the earth.

Rules

Modiar is played on a board which has two rows each of three holes with with seven stones (per hole. Each player controls one row.

Modiar

Initial Position

On his turn a player empties one of his holes and distributes its contents, one by one, counterclockwise into the ensuing holes. The first stone is placed in the hole, which had been just emptied. The sowing ends after a single lap.

It is not permitted to start from holes, whoch contain singletons.

If a player's row is empty, his opponent must "feed" him.

If the last stone makes a 2, a 4 or a 6 on either side of the board, these stones are captured. However, In the first of the game, the capture is forfeited. If the previous holes contain 2, 4 or 6 stones, these are captured too as long as these holes form a continous chain.

A player is not permitted to make a move, which captures all the seeds in the opponent's row.

The game ends, when a player can't move at the start of his turn

Each player gets the stones in his holes in addition to his captures.

The player who has captured most seeds wins.
