Ranks: Two
Sowing: Single laps
Region: Netherlands

MiniMancala was invented in 2001 by Christian Freeling. It is one of the smallest mancala games in existence, although Nano-Wari is smaller and Micro-Wari (played on a board of the same size) needs fewer seeds. Freeling calls it the "smallest almost non-trivial mancala game". MiniMancala was solved by the inventor and then implemented by Ed van Zon with two Java applications called Lite-8 and MiniMancala. With perfect play the game is a draw.

In 2005, MiniMancala was chosen for a project that provided a basis and rational for software games of African origin on mobile phones. Its rules were slightly changed (e.g. two more holes) and the new game was called Henney's Mancala.

Rules

MiniMancala

Popular among teenagers

The board consists of two rows of two holes each. A player controls the row closest to him. Initially each hole contains two seeds.

Initial Position

On his turn a player distributes the contents of one of his holes, one by one, in a counterclockwise direction over the following holes.

It is not possible to capture.

If a player finds both of his holes empty at the start of his turn, he has lost. The other player is declared the winner.
